The NWI agreement was signed by all governments at the 25 June 2004 Council of Australian Governments meeting with the exception of Tasmania which signed the Agreement on 3 June 2005 and Western Australia which signed the Agreement on 6 April 2006.

The Australian Government’s Water Smart Australia Programme aims to accelerate the development and uptake of smart technologies and practices in water use across Australia.The $1.6 billion Programme has funding over five years until 2010. It is targeted at large-scale projects. As a general guide, the minimum level of funding available through the programme for a project is $1 million, and the maximum funding duration is four years.

Under the competitive grants pathway of the Raising National Water Standards Programme, the Commission is calling for proposals that address investment priorities in one or more strategic areas of water management (with the exception of the National assessment of water resources area). Up to $30 million is available for this call to support high-priority quality projects that advance the implementation of the National Water Initiative.

The Community Water Grants Programme will provide grants of up to $50 000 to communities to promote the wise use of water.
